Price: $34.95 - $28.97
(as of Jul 26, 2024 04:52:47 UTC – Details)

Technical instructor and HVAC expert Jerry Clemons completely covers both air-conditioning as well as heating systems, so you can save money repairing your own vehicle.

Covered is a history of HVAC systems, airflow throughout the system, the principles of refrigerant, diagnosis of common faults in older systems, testing procedures, and finally repair and, in the case of air conditioning, recharging your system. Also included is proper evacuation and disposal of any residual refrigerant in the system. Components such as compressors, condensers, evaporators and heater cores, pressure switches and climate control electrics and switches are also covered. Finally, for people with older cars, converting from the no-longer-available R-12 to R134a is detailed.

Automotive climate controls are a complex system and are difficult to repair without proper instruction. Whether you are trying to get your old classic back to its original form or are just looking to save on expensive repairs, author Jerry Clemons and this book provide the knowledge you will need to get your car back on the road and cruising in comfort.

AC Refrigeration Systems

It is helpful to understand the flow of refrigerant as it passes through each section of the AC system. The low side of the AC system runs from the exit of the orifice tube up to the entry point of the compressor. The high side of the AC system runs from the exit point of the compressor to the entry point of the orifice tube.

Diagnosis of the AC System

A system leak that has dye installed will show up as bright color when the black light is aimed at the leak. Service ports are a common location of refrigerant leaks and should always be closely checked when using the black light.

Recovery, Evacuation & Recharging

A quality electric vacuum pump is needed to pull a good vacuum on the AC system each time it has been opened for service or each time that the refrigerant has leaked out. Pulling a vacuum on the AC system removes air and moisture prior to adding the refrigerant back into the system.

2-12-1

Always wear personal protection equipment (PPE) when performing repair and maintenance on a vehicle’s AC or heating system. Quality Z87-rated safety glasses will provide eye protection. Wearing quality latex or nitrile gloves protects the hands from potential frostbite.

Repairing the AC System

Once the duct box has been removed from the vehicle, the top of the unit can be removed to gain access to the evaporator core. It is wise to pay close attention to the linkages, actuators, and the number and location of fasteners that are removed during this process.

Electrical Operation on the HVAC System

Fuses can be tested with an ohmmeter without removing them from their mounting location. After disconnecting the battery, the ohmmeter leads should be inserted at the metallic tabs on each fuse to measure the resistance of the device. A good fuse will have a very low reading on the meter, and a bad fuse will have an OL reading on the meter, which means the fuse is blown (open).

Heating Systems

The coolant flow valve controls the flow of coolant into the heater core mechanically with a lever that is activated by a cable that connects to the temperature-control knob on the control head. This valve is made from plastic and has metallic levers that bolt to the unit.
